Most teachers are accustomed to wearing formal work attire – which means no jeans! But trends are changing, and formal occupations are increasingly allowing jeans at work. So, are jeans allowed in a teacher’s work wardrobe? Elementary teachers generally can’t wear jeans, but it depends on the school policy and culture and the occasion. Some schools allow elementary teachers to wear jeans as long as they maintain a professional attitude. Others only allow wearing jeans to extracurricular events and on casual days. To help you understand whether it’s okay to don your jeans to work or stick to the pencil skirt instead, here are some situations where teachers may or may not wear jeans, as well as the pros and cons of wearing jeans to school. When Teachers Should Not Wear Jeans Teaching is one of the most respected professions in our society. And because of the huge influence of teachers on the youth, it’s not just their teaching method or their brilliant minds that are necessary for the performance of their job. Their dressing also must speak competence and professionalism to make a positive impact on the young minds of learners. So, while dress codes are continually changing in schools all over the country, there still are instances when teachers may not wear their favorite pair of jeans to work. Let’s review these instances in greater detail. School Policies Strictly Prohibit Casual Wear The first thing to consider, of course, is the dress code. If the school’s policies call for wearing formal attire to school (which means absolutely no jeans), you should not go against these policies. Doing so communicates a lack of professionalism and inability to follow the rules. Most private schools are pretty strict regarding the dress code. So if you don’t think you can come to work in a formal dress every weekday, you should probably consider working elsewhere. There are black jeans that can sometimes pass off as not denim, but even these are not allowed if your school requires formal or business attire. School Culture Calls for Professionalism in Dress Most schools have a strict dress code because they want to set the bar high for their teaching staff. This includes not just their competence as teachers, but also how they present themselves to students and the rest of society. The premise of this requirement is that dressing up can affect how people around you perceive your authority and ability. Private schools and those with religious affiliations generally have a more conservative approach to education. As such, they have strict regulations that guide teachers on how to dress. When Teachers May Wear Jeans Despite strict dress codes, there are situations when even teachers who are required to wear formal attire may come to work wearing a pair of blue jeans. If you’re a teacher stuck with wearing pencil skirts or slacks most of the time, wearing jeans can be fun and exciting! Here are some instances when teachers may be allowed to wear jeans: On Casual Days Even teachers who are required to come to work in business attire may have casual days. Most schools have guidelines on what they can wear on dress-down days, but the important thing is that jeans are typically on the OK list! Some of the dress code guidelines for casual days leave a lot to be desired. For instance, did you know that some schools demand that teachers pay for the privilege of wearing casual attire one day a week? Yep! Some schools ask teachers to pay $5 to $25 just so they can wear jeans to work. In one such instance, the money is collected as part of a fundraiser which is supposedly for the benefit of the teachers themselves. But when you think about it, there’s just too much that’s wrong with a system like this. Teachers should not have to pay just to be able to have a dress-down day. When Attending Field Trips or Extra-Curricular Events Teachers are typically allowed to wear jeans when accompanying students on field trips or attending extra-curricular activities. Sports events, for example, may see teachers in casual attire to encourage an atmosphere of fun and play. But another reason for this is that teachers can be more mobile when they’re not in their usual pencil skirts, allowing them to run after straying kids, help organize events, and even clean up or decorate program venues. When School Policies Allow Jeans Teachers who work in schools where dress codes are more lenient can enjoy wearing casual attire to work. Even when jeans are allowed in these workplaces, there still are guidelines in place to make sure that teachers are not dressed too casually. Wearing skinny jeans, for example, is typically not allowed, as well as wearing skimpy, body-hugging, or revealing outfits. If you work at a school where the dress code is not a big issue, try to dress up your jeans so you still look professional. Remember that how you present yourself has an impact on how effective you can be at your job. You don’t have to look like you own the place, but it will be to your advantage to look clean, decent, and respectable. Pros of Wearing Jeans Most teachers will, without question, jump at the opportunity to wear jeans to work. But aside from the fact that jeans are the piece of clothing that many teachers prefer, are there other advantages of letting them wear jeans to work? As it turns out, yes. Here are some of the most important advantages of wearing jeans to work: Teachers Are More Comfortable Formal outfits can be a hassle–both to prepare and to wear. Also, business wear is often more expensive to maintain; talk about having to drop by the dry cleaners week after week. On the other hand, jeans allow teachers to move around more freely. Plus, they need no special cleaning or maintenance. Put them in the wash, and that’s it. Also, wearing jeans can be a huge comfort when working with children. You no longer have to worry about creasing your skirt or leaving a stain when you clean up after the mess your students leave in the classroom. Because let’s face it: much of a teacher’s job is un-glamorous, tiresome, and even sometimes dirty. Let’s not even mention the times when you have to chase down unruly students who decide to have a marathon in the hallway. That’s pretty hard to do in a pencil skirt. Jeans Make Teachers More Approachable Jeans also make teachers look more relatable and approachable. They blend in with the crowd more easily, which makes them less intimidating. Teachers don’t only teach with chalk and a blackboard. They also act as mentors to young children and sometimes even provide counsel when their students are struggling. Students who are going through issues are less likely to approach someone they don’t think they can talk to on a personal or friendly level. Certainly, the teacher in formal attire with her hair up in a bun is not the image that kids conjure when they think of a friendly face. You Can Dress Up Your Jeans Too If you're concerned that wearing jeans makes you look lousy or less competent, it doesn’t have to be so. There are ways you can dress up your jeans so you can come to work looking sharp without sacrificing ease of movement and comfort. For example, try pairing your favorite jeans with a solid color blouse and a blazer. This ensemble still speaks authority and professionalism, but not to the point where students will be afraid to greet you in the hallway. Knowing what the cons are will help you weigh whether it’s to your advantage to skip the formal wear and don casual jeans instead. Jeans Can Look Less Conservative The number one concern about wearing jeans to school is that they can look less conservative. There are institutions that have high standards of proper behavior and dressing, which may be sacrificed by wearing jeans. This is especially true for women who may be fond of figure-hugging jeans or leggings. But even jeans that are not tight can outline a woman’s figure much more than wearing a formal dress or a pair of dress pants. While some schools don’t consider this a concern, there are institutions that mind little details like that. Students May See Their Teachers As Buddies It’s great when teachers have a good relationship with their students. But when teachers are dressed too casually, they may be seen more as buddies rather than a figure of authority. While this is not always true, teachers dressed casually may not be regarded with the same level of respect as those who look authoritative. Thankfully, though, the level of respect a teacher gets doesn’t all rest on the way they dress. Other details like the way they carry themselves, their speech, and their conduct in and out of the classroom also come into play. Final Thoughts While wearing formal attire helps teachers look professional, wearing jeans also does have its merits. It helps them connect better with their students, become more active in the workplace, and have more flexibility when it comes to school functions. Besides, just like everyone else, teachers are more likely to perform better when happy with their appearance and dress. Because nothing beats having fun doing what you love to do.
